Set amidst towering deodar forests, the Hadimba Devi Temple is one of the most iconic and sacred landmarks of Manali. Built in 1553 AD by Raja Bahadur Singh, the temple is dedicated to Goddess Hadimba, wife of Bhima from the Mahabharata, who is revered as the protective deity of the region.
History & Legend
According to mythology, after the great war of Mahabharata, Bhima’s wife Hadimba stayed back in the valley to perform meditation and penance. She later became a goddess, worshipped as the guardian of Manali. The temple stands at the very spot where she is believed to have meditated.
Architecture
The temple is a classic example of Himachali wooden architecture. Its four-tiered pagoda-style roof is made of wood and slate, while the intricately carved wooden doors depict mythological figures, animals, and celestial beings. Unlike most temples, the sanctum houses a foot-shaped rock believed to be the imprint of the goddess, rather than an idol.
Cultural Significance
Hadimba Devi is the presiding deity of Manali, and local festivals and fairs celebrate her divine presence. The Hadimba Devi Fair, held in May, attracts devotees and travelers with folk music, dance, and colorful rituals.
